Aloha kakahiaka kakou.
The 2006 Convention of the Democratic Party of Kaua???i concluded a little after 6 hours of meetings and deliberations, yesterday, May 6, 2006. Many off-island and local dignitaries and candidates addressed the convention including Mike McCartney, Mazie Hirono, Gary Hooser, Michael Cuerzorst, Ron Menor, Nestor Garcia, Jesse Fukushima, Jay Furfaro, Clay Springer, JoAnn Yukimura, Tim Byum, Mina Morita and Linda Estes. Messages were sent and speeches were made on behalf of Daniel Inouye, Daniel Akaka, Ed Case, Randy Iwase and Colleen Hanabusa.
Resolutions were passed calling for the complete withdrawal of troops from Iraq by the end of the year, filing impeachment articles against George W. Bush, overhauling of the process by which dams are inspected, a moratorium on resort, commercial and industial development and the reintroduction next legislative session of HB2454 (redefining how the governor appoints mid-term vacancies). Other resolutions were passed that support bicycle safety, bicycles as alternate transportation, civil unions and a pure party primary system.
A new platform was introduced and caused much debate and many changes before the Platform Committee, and then the floor discussed and approved philosophical stances on issues of education, economic opportunties, environment, affordable quality healthcare, government operations, safety and security, transportation, growth and supporting Native Hawaiians.
Rule changes specific to Kaua???i County approved at the convention include initiating annual county conventions, moving the election of the Executive Committee to the off-year, and allowing the annual convention to be held prior and including to the first weekend in May. Rule changes also defined a new position of the Kaua???i County Executive Committee, that of Information Technician and provide for the elections of that position and those of Youth Representatives.
The convention filled the following positions:
Chair: Martin Rice
Vice-Chair: George "Keoki" Gosselin
Co-Treasurers: Betty Matsumura and Jimmy Ikehara
Secretary: Ray Paler
Information Technician: Amy Chun
The convention also included a discussion as to the timeframe of holding the convention. The floor agreed that moving the convention away from its traditional Saturday morning might allow for larger attendence and would allow for off-island candidates to more readily participate without conflicting statewide conventions. Sunday afternoon was discussed as an alternate time and date. It was also suggested that co-ordinating the four county conventions to avoid conflicting schedules might be in the interest of the off-island candidates who wish to participate.
Final Committee Reports on Platform, Resolutions and Rules will be broadcast as soon as they are finalized and received. Also, those reports will be posted on the webpage at the earliest possible time along with pictures taken at the convention: www.kauaidemocrats.org.
